Benjamin Miles Spokane Newborn Session

Kelsey and I met after I had been in Okinawa for less than a week. Our husbands fly together, our dogs love each other (for about two minutes before Sydney gets overwhelmed), and we both lived on the seawall and shared a walking/jogging route, so we saw each other regularly. She loves to bake, and I love fondant design, so it only took us a few weeks on-island before we started tag-teaming cakes every time one of our friends had a baby shower (which seemed pretty constant!). About a year ago, I helped her design her blog:  Confections of a Dietitian and have loved watching her food photography and reading about all the yummy things she makes- even if I have yet to get around to actually making one of them myself.

Basically, we had a pretty good thing going on in Japan, so we were excited to find out that we’d both be moving to Spokane in the fall of 2017.

From the moment we started house hunting in Spokane, I began dreaming of the day I would open a newborn studio. It took me about two minutes to get on pinterest and start pinning every little bit of newborn studio inspiration I could find. My “studio” in Japan was our third bedroom and it doubled as a craft room, tripled as a closet, and quadrupled as a landing space for anything that didn’t have a home. I’m not kidding when I tell people that I cared more about this studio than I did about any of the kitchens or the closets that I was supposed to care about on as we house hunted. When we finally found the perfect house, we started on the studio.

My first session, a toddler cake smash/bubble bath, was scheduled for 20 days after our move in day- which meant floors needed to be laid and walls and ceilings had to be painted in the studio before we could do anything else. It took several almost-all-nighters, but we pulled it off, and as I sent out that gallery I promised myself that for the rest of the fall/winter our home renovation would be my full time job. I set the much more realistic goal for myself that we would open the studio officially on May 1, 2018 which meant that with Kelsey’s April 29 due date- I had built in motivation.

So with all of that said, meet Benjamin Miles Hughes. Born April 29 (on his due date!) in Spokane, Washington. He was a perfect angel for his session. In fact… I laughed to his mama that he reminded me of the babies I always watch in newborn photography workshops- the kind who sleep soundly, let you play with their hands and maneuver them all over the beanbag, and even give you cheeky little smiles while they’re sleeping. He was a dream!

We stuck to a mostly neutral color palette with teals, blues and green and incorporated a beautiful blanket knitted by his grandma and a sweet hat made by our friend Leslie, whose daughter was one of my last sessions in my third-bedroom studio in Japan.

I was also thrilled to get to use some of my favorite “babies” from the oh-so-talented Vasilisa. She hand knits all of the little bunnies, foxes, teddy bears, etc. that I have in the studio and I am constantly stalking her page for re-stocks.

We’ve got four more little boys rolling through the studio over the next month, and I am unbelievably excited to try on all of the sweet little outfits I’ve been making for them. All the girl props come so naturally- but the boy squad of May and June has inspired me and the studio’s been looking awfully masculine these days!
